The following is issued on behalf of the Electoral Affairs Commission:
The 2019 District Council Ordinary Election will be held on November 24 (Sunday) this year and the nomination period started today (October 4). As in the past, the Electoral Affairs Commission (EAC) is committed to ensuring that public elections are conducted in an open, fair and honest manner.
"The District Council Ordinary Election to be held in November is an important platform for over 4.13 million registered electors to elect their representatives," an EAC spokesman said today.
"The EAC is aware of the violent incidents that have happened recently in society. Hong Kong has all along had a very good election culture. We do not want to see any threats or violence in the election. If any such complaints are received, the EAC will refer them to the relevant law enforcement agencies for follow-up action."
The spokesman reiterated that the election is a solemn matter. The electoral procedures are strictly sanctioned by the relevant electoral legislation. Electors rely on fair and orderly elections to elect their representatives. If anyone is not satisfied with the electoral arrangements, they can make complaints or submit election petitions through judicial proceedings to resolve the disputes.
